More about our services

Building Elements was founded by Paul Hawthorn in 2002. We are a small, personal company with a big reputation for friendly, professional service and high quality workmanship.

With more than 18 years’ experience in the building industry, and after learning from some of the best in the business both in New Zealand and England, Paul decided to start his own company.  His vision and passion for building will drive your experience from the first time you talk, through to the creation of a space that you'll love, and Building Elements can be proud of.

We have grown from a two man team in 2003, to a highly skilled team of six, with a combined total of 38 years in the building industry.

Building Elements is a fully accredited member of the Certified Builders Association of NZGet in touch to arrange for us to come and meet you.

Meet the team

Paul Hawthorn – Owner/Director
Paul started his building career straight from school, first completing a 1 yr pre-apprentice building course, and then gaining employment as an apprentice in his home town of Kaitaia.  After completing his apprenticeship and gaining his building trade qualification, Paul travelled to London to continue his building career.  Paul views his time in London as a valuable opportunity gaining exposure to a vast array of building methods and practices, some not commonly seen in New Zealand.  On his return to New Zealand, Paul settled in Auckland where he started Building Elements in 2002, and met his wife in 2004.  Paul and his wife have two small children.  When starting Building Elements Paul’s goal was to create a building company that offers excellence in skills, service, and the finished product, standards that Paul continues to strive for as the company grows.

Scott Todd – Builder
Installing mezzanine floors and dry wall partitioning, while on his OE, was the catalyst that sparked Scott’s career in building.  Upon his return to New Zealand in 2006 with wife Marie, Scott joined Building Elements.  Originally from Dunedin, Scott settled in Auckland, where he and his wife are now raising their two young children.  In 2007 Scott began his apprenticeship.  One aspect of building that Scott finds most rewarding is seeing a building come to life from a set of plans, and in particular overseeing the execution of the finer details.

Dave Patience – Builder
Dave began building in 2003, after studying business at Auckland University.  In 2007 he gained his qualification in building.  Dave is passionate about all things New Zealand, from surfing in the summer, to enjoying the snow in the winter, and in particular helping to create exceptional New Zealand homes.  One of the things Dave enjoys most about the building industry is the interaction and relationships built with clients.

Paul Buddle – Builder
Originally from New Zealand, Paul began his building career in Australia in 2005, where he spent time working on ‘new builds’.  Upon his return to New Zealand in 2009 with partner Fran, Paul joined the Building Elements team.  Paul and his partner have a young daughter.  One aspect of building that Paul finds most rewarding is the constant challenge posed by variations in building materials and designs.

Grayson Masina – Apprentice
Difficulty finding an apprenticeship when he left school wasn’t enough to put Grayson off his dream of becoming a builder.  After finding work labouring, Grayson eventually joined the Building Elements team at the start of 2009.  Now part way through his apprenticeship, Grayson’s greatest pleasure is standing back at the completion of a project, and admiring a job well done.

Matt Williams – Apprentice
Matt embarked on a career in retail before joining Building Elements at the beginning of 2009.  Matt was drawn to the practical aspects of the building trade and now, studying for his apprenticeship, enjoys gaining new and useful skills.  Matt enjoys the constant challenges that come from working on renovations, and is looking forward to a long and successful career in the industry.
